For What Are We? Moments #10 friends pointing [it] out

Vidar had only been with the band a few months but he could see it like a beacon. The others were blind. They had to be. They were all sitting around Harald's apartment and had gotten on the topic of previous bands. He'd always wondered why Trygg was in this band and wore make up like he was a girl. That answer had come now. Trygg had previously been the bassist and lead singer of a glam band.

Some cajoling and soon Trygg was standing in the middle of the room, playing bass and singing some of the music from his old band. Vidar could only stare wide-eyed. In part, because he had never heard Trygg sing and he had a massive voice. Understandably, not what would fit lead on their current band, but he could see how he had spent years before with a successful band. The other thing that had the drummer's attention was the lyrics. While the other two listened, Vidar was watching Trygg's gaze and how certain lyrics pulled his eyes to their guitarist.

Screaming in the night, fighting for my life, I'd die for you
I knew it all along, headed for the sun
Our love was true (our love was true)
Screaming in the night, fighting for my life, I'd die for you
I knew it all along, headed for the sun
Our love was true, oh

Every time Trygg sang 'I'd die for you' his eyes would fix on the blonde Norwegian who seemed oblivious to what was happening. Vidar couldn't unsee it. Their bassist wasn't just best friends with their guitarist. Trygg was in love. Sure, he had a girlfriend, or Vidar thought he did with the girl that hung around with them sometimes but there was nothing that hid the way he stared at Harald.

“I'm going to get some air.” Trygg spoke as he slug off his bass to set it in the stand. Vidar watched the other two go about as if nothing had happened.

After a few moments of watching Harald and Korppi go about as if this was just some jam session, Vidar got up and headed outside. It was freezing outside, snowing and dark. Trygg was standing on the porch against he wall staring blankly at the blizzard.

“Are you alright?” Vidar asked as he closed the door behind. The cold was bitter, biting but the bassist seemed perfectly happy out here. Trust a Finn to not care about the cold.

“Of course.” Trygg spoke but Vidar heard the tone. “I was thinking and wanted to clear my head.”

Vidar stood across from him, leaning on the railing. Trygg was shivering but he didn't look cold; no flush to his cheeks or gooseflesh. Vidar didn't think the bassist was ok, not inside.

“That was a hell of a song.” Vidar thought maybe he could get at this from another direction without calling the Finn out over it all.

“Thanks.” Trygg smiled faintly. “I used to love performing it and it's been on my mind for awhile now. It was good to play it again.”

Vidar swallowed hard and thought it was best to approach Trygg head on. The man was a rock, stable, calm. Another reason all of this felt off to the drummer was Trygg's sudden lack of calm. “Why is that?”

Trygg's green eyes about bore into his soul for that question. Vidar shifted against the railing. Trygg finally broke that pinning gaze. “Why does it matter?”

Vidar felt those words hit into him like a brick wall. He could feel the heartbreak in them and hear the slight break in Trygg's voice. He couldn't say nothing. This guy had become like a brother he never had. “Harald?”

Trygg's eyes closed and Vidar watched the trail of steamed breath that hitched. The bassist's head shook no against the wall but the way he suddenly hugged himself there against the wall said more than even the silence. He felt for Trygg and wondered how long he'd been shoving these feelings down into whatever depths they had been hidden in. Trygg shrugged again. “Cheri is going back to France.”

Vidar narrowed his eyes and shook his head. “The other two might be blinder than Hodur in the dark but I'm not. That wasn't some girl.”

Trygg turned a way and stepped off the porch into the snow and Vidar followed with a hand soon on his bassist's shoulder. He felt like someone had to try and cheer him up even if this was too damned cold out here for the drummer. Trygg stepped away and Vidar rolled his eyes as he kept up with the taller bassist.

Trygg eventually slowed down enough that Vidar could talk to him. “Come on. He'll pay attention.”

Trygg sighed and stopped in the dark. Vidar watched the snow swirling around the bassist and he looked like some god from an edda. “You're hot as hell. Surely, he can see it.”

Vidar watched Trygg turn away again but not before he started to see the tears welling up. Fuck. He didn't think the bassist was this far in, this deep. This felt like he had shoved his foot in his mouth. What else could he say after that look before Trygg turned away?

“We're brothers. That's all.” Trygg spoke, quietly, but the breaking was there as Vidar watched the bassist try to pull his calm back together.

Vidar did the only thing he could, be a distraction. He gave Trygg a gentle shove. “Let's walk down to the sea.”

Trygg nodded and the both walked down toward the closest fjord. Vidar couldn't bear to say anything more but he would be there if Trygg wanted it, freezing but he would be there.
